Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Are clear aligners right for me? Since so few of us are born with perfectly aligned teeth, just about anyone is a good candidate for an orthodontic consultation. It’s estimated that 75% of Americans could benefit from orthodontic treatment.

  • How long does clear aligner treatment take? Treatment times vary based on each patient’s unique situation and commitment to wearing the aligners as prescribed, however, treatment general takes between 6 and 18 months. At Whitehaven Dental we can take a scan of your teeth and work up a treatment plan so you have a good estimate for length of time and can even see a time lapse showing what your smile will look like following treatment. We want to answer all your questions and make sure you understand the process prior to beginning treatment.

  • Do you have a payment plan? We offer 0% financing for 6 months through CareCredit.

What kind of conditions can clear aligners treat?

  • Overcrowding - makes it difficult to brush and floss correctly. That can allow tartar, plaque, and harmful bacteria to build up and cause oral health problems like tooth decay and gum disease.

  • Overbite/underbite - can cause difficulty breathing, tooth decay, and gum disease. More severe cases may even cause jaw disorders, jaw pain, and headaches.

  • Crossbite (some of your upper teeth sit inside your lower teeth) - your teeth may grind together in the wrong places, which can lead to chipped teeth and worn-down gums. Severe crossbite can also cause lopsided jaw growth, jaw disorders, and pain, and you may find it difficult to perform everyday tasks like eating, drinking, and speaking.

  • Spacing or gaps - excessive space between teeth can leave your gums unprotected and make it easy for food to get stuck between your teeth, which can cause tooth decay and gum disease. Without the support of surrounding teeth, a tooth could also become loose or even break.

  • Crooked teeth - can affect a person's confidence in their smile, which is reason enough to fix them, but they can also impact oral hygiene, potentially leading to tooth decay, gum disease, and infections of the jaw and teeth.

What to understand about clear aligners before starting treatment:

  1. Aligners need to be in your mouth a minimum of 22 hours per day to work properly. They should only be removed to eat, drink, or clean.

  2. Attachments are sometimes needed to drive a tooth. Attachments are small tooth-colored bumps placed on your teeth to help clear aligners move your teeth. They’re removed at the end of treatment.

  3. We will give you four trays at a time have you return about every 8 weeks to make sure you are still on track and give you more trays. We may smooth and polish between teeth if needed according to the treatment plan to help facilitate movement of teeth.

  4. You may need refinements to zero in your bite at the end of treatment. We may also need to make some adjustments to your teeth to ensure your bite is in alignment.

  5. Your case will come with a retainer to wear following treatment. It is essential in the first few months after treatment to keep the teeth in place while the surrounding bone and soft tissue adjust to the new positions. In some cases retainers may need to be worn indefinitely to maintain the desired smile. It is important to follow Dr. Ripplinger’s instructions following treatment.
